CHRYSILLA VOLUPE, THE RARE JUMPING SPIDER

When I used to spend time with the adorable jumping spiders in my garden a few years ago, I had no idea that these little creatures were such rare finds in the biological world. It’s fascinating to think that something so small could be of such interest to researchers. I recently came across some fascinating information about the ‘Chrysilla Volupe’, a species believed to have been extinct for over 150 years. Surprisingly, it was rediscovered at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in 2018. More recently, there have been sightings of this species during the cleanup of Puttenahalli lake in Bangalore. Interestingly, I had been observing these remarkable creatures in my home in Kottayam, Kerala long before these sightings. I made several attempts to capture them on camera, but these energetic little jumping spiders proved to be quite the challenge to photograph with a macro lens. The male spider has a reddish tint on its head with two distinct lines of fluorescent blue on top. Its entire body displays iridescent rainbow-like colors that appear different from various angles. THE PARADOX OF ABSTRACT REALITY

I search for that artistic essence in everything; in water, scattered clouds, the earth’s muck, on wood or leaves that have fallen. By chance, I discovered these laterite stone blocks while building my home. This type of soil is abundant in iron ore, aluminium (bauxite), and various other minerals, giving the material a rich palette of colors. Some of the stones’ cross-sections resembled stunning abstract art pieces, and I found myself unable to resist capturing those moments on camera. Here are a few examples:

THOUGHT-PROVOKING FRAMES

“THE SIGN OF ALLAH [ Arabic: الله ]” I frequently find myself puzzled by how faith and fate are intertwined. Whenever I was short on photography subjects, something unexpected would suddenly present itself. It was on one particularly scorching day in India, as I was on the hunt for the perfect subject for my photographs. To my surprise, a nutmeg fruit dropped right in front of me, splitting open to reveal two halves. The vibrant red mace encircling the black seed gave it a heart-like appearance. Although each seed is unique, this one seemed oddly distinct. Upon closer inspection through my camera lens, I noticed an Arabic word that looked like ‘Allah’. Whether this was a mere coincidence or a figment of my overactive imagination, I can’t say. Regardless, I feel that the heart-shaped nut with the word ‘Allah’ inscribed on it was sending me a message. “THE SECRET OF HAPPINESS” The secret of happiness is freedom. CHAND BAORI OF ABHANERI (WORLD’S LARGEST STEP WELL)

Water holds a sacred place in Indian culture, being revered as one of the ‘Panch Bhootas’ (Five elements of life) since ancient times. It is believed that life began in water, and the future progress will be centered around it. The foresight of great Indian rulers ensured the survival of the desert state of Rajasthan in the face of nature’s challenges. In the little-known town of Abhaneri near Jaipur, India, one can find the World’s largest step-well. Originally known as Abha Nagari (The City of Brightness), it was established by King Raja Chand of the Nikumbha Dynasty between the 8th and 9th centuries AD. Ancient Hindu wisdom emphasized the interconnectedness of worship places and nature as a means of protecting the environment. This is demonstrated by the presence of ancient temples in India, often accompanied by functioning wells or ponds. King Chand’s legacy lives on in the form of the magnificent Baori, (step-well or step-pond, बावड़ी or बावली) built in Abhaneri around 825 AD. The Chola Dynasty, which thrived from 300 BC to 1279 CE in Southern India, were devout followers of Shaivism and ardent supporters of arts, literature, and poetry. The Chola Kings, also known as “சோழர்” in Tamil, held a significant position among the rulers of India. They were renowned for constructing numerous Shiva Temples across the world, many of which still stand today. The collection of three remarkable architectural wonders, known as ‘The Great Living Chola Temples,’ were constructed by the Chola Kings and can still be found in Thanjavur, Gangaikondacholapuram, and Darasuram in Tamil Nadu. These temples stand out for their distinctive Dravidian architecture and exceptional artistic craftsmanship. The group of three magnificent architectural wonders dating back to the Medieval Chola period are collectively known as ‘The Great Living Chola Temples’, and are still standing proudly in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. These remarkable temples, Brihadiswara (<click), Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram (<click) , are celebrated for their exceptional Dravidian architecture, profound scientific knowledge, and astonishing artistic craftsmanship. Before delving into this page, I recommend acquainting yourself with the story of Raja Raja Chola and his monumental creation, the Brihadiswara Temple. Rajendra Chola-I (இராசேந்திர சோழன்), the son of the illustrious Rajaraja-I, reigned from 1012 to 1044 AD. ‘The Great Living Chola Temples’, a group of three magnificent architectural marvels, were constructed during the Medieval Chola period and continue to stand proudly in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. These extraordinary temples – Brihadiswara, Gangaikondacholapuram (<click) and Darasuram (<click) – are renowned for their Dravidian architecture, advanced scientific knowledge, and exceptional artistic craftsmanship. During my explorations of the history of the Chola empire, I had the opportunity to witness the entire life cycle of a dynasty that governed nearly all of Southern India for an extensive period. While the precise origins of the Chola dynasty remain ambiguous, it is thought that they coexisted with Ashoka around 300BC and maintained their dominance until 1279AD. Similar to many influential civilizations situated near rivers, the Chola territory was also established around the Kaveri river basin, and their remarkable legacy endures through the grand temples they constructed in the area. EXQUISITE ELEPHANTA CAVES

The relentless bombardment from the artillery persisted for weeks and months, despite the absence of any actual enemies in the vicinity. Surprisingly, it was the Portuguese soldiers who were using the cannons to target the imposing rock sculptures in Elephanta Caves as part of their training exercises. Reflecting on the historical timeline of explorations, invasions, and colonization, it becomes evident that bloodshed and devastation were the unwelcome companions of each successful event. Descendants of the ruthless invaders who reduced the treasures of a magnificent country to mere rubble and sand should feel remorseful for the actions of their ancestors. While we proudly extol the rich culture and heritage of India, it is disheartening that these distressing truths are frequently overlooked. ENCHANTING ELLORA

The Ellora Cave Complex, located 29 kilometers North-West of Aurangabad, a prominent city situated 300 kilometers away from Mumbai in India, is a fascinating historical site. Originally known as Elapura, the complex consists of temples and monasteries dedicated to Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, dating back to between 600-1000 AD. Carved out of volcanic basalt rock, this extraordinary group of caves showcases the rich religious and cultural history of the region. Although a hundred caves have been discovered, only 34 are currently accessible to the public, offering a glimpse into the ancient heritage of the area. Long ago, the Deccan plateau was shaped by ancient volcanic activity, as molten lava cooled and solidified into layers of basaltic rock. Evidence of early human settlements dating back thousands of years has been discovered in this region, indicating its historical significance. Ellora’s strategic location near a prominent trade route, dating back to the Satavahana dynasty (271 BC to 30 BC), likely contributed to its continual inhabitation and preservation unlike the nearby Ajanta caves. Located approximately 450 kilometers away from the vibrant city of Mumbai, ‘Ajanta’ stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of ancient Indian art, architecture, culture, and religion. THE RIVER AND BEYOND… ANEGUNDI

Let’s take a journey back in time as we explore the history spanning over 5000 years. Our story begins with the river Pampa (Tungabhadra), the lifeblood of a great civilization that once thrived in the southern state of Karnataka in India. Anegundi is a serene village located just opposite to Hampi, on the northern bank of the river Tungabhadra; a place where evolution, history, mythology and folklore intertwine. The name Anegundi (or Anegondi, ಆನೆಗುಂದಿ/ಆನೆಗೊಂದಿ) originates from the Kannada language, meaning “Elephant pit.” It was the early capital of the Vijayanagara empire before it was moved to Hampi, possibly deriving its name from the king’s elephant stables that were originally situated here. HAMPI, WHERE RUINS COME ALIVE !

Rivers are like the lifeblood of a nation, shaping its history and development. The ancient Vijayanagara empire, for example, thrived along the banks of rivers, with its roots intertwined with folklore and mythology when explored further. The river Pampa served as the vital artery of a magnificent civilization in the southern state of Karnataka, India. A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE STREET STORIES

HOLINESS OF LONELINESS I encountered an elderly man (a Sadhu) in Rishikesh, a renowned Hindu pilgrimage site situated along the banks of the Ganga river in India. His sole possession was the Holy book, which he cherished close to his heart. He did not smile or ask for alms, yet the serenity on his countenance indicated that his satisfied soul had transcended the physical realm. There are occasions when we come to understand that the essence of life is simply a vast emptiness! Moments frozen in time, where emptiness fills megapixels ! THE BAREFOOTED GOD The deity manifested before me! Indeed, it occurred on a pleasant Sunday morning as I leisurely walked through the streets of Bangalore. Upon hearing a chime, I turned around and there he was – Rama, barefooted with a serene smile adorning his face. The young man was earning some additional income in his new avatar. A PET CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

If you are experiencing feelings of isolation, depression, sadness, or stress, consider owning a pet as a beneficial remedy. The positive impact of owning a pet on individuals suffering from psychological issues and cardiovascular conditions is clearly evident. Research has shown that having a pet satisfies the fundamental human need for physical contact, which plays a crucial role in alleviating anxiety, stress, emotional instability, hypertension, and other related problems. From a scientific perspective, the hormonal connection between humans and their pets has existed for centuries. Various studies have demonstrated that when a person and their pet gaze into each other’s eyes, both parties experience an increase in oxytocin levels, the hormone responsible for promoting maternal bonding and trust. A warm embrace is often the best medicine. Unlike humans, animals demonstrate unconditional love and eagerly embrace opportunities to express it. I had the privilege of observing and capturing the moments of a mother cat and her three kittens for a while. Come and appreciate the beauty of motherhood and the purity of adolescence with me.

VARANASI, A CITY BEYOND LIFE & DEATH

VARANASI, also recognized as BENARAS or KASHI, holds the prestigious title of being the oldest living city globally, with a well-documented history of over 3000 years. Mark Twain’s words resonate as he stated, “Varanasi is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and appears twice as old as all of them combined.” This ancient city has withstood the test of time, existing even during the childhood years of Siddhartha Gautama, who would later become known as Buddha. Varanasi is located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on the western bank of the sacred Ganga River. This ancient city, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs, serves as a religious hub. Despite facing destruction by Mughals and other invaders over the centuries, Varanasi continues to stand as a place where the past and present, eternity and continuity, philosophy and wisdom harmoniously coexist. KOTACHADRI : ADVENTURE MEETS WITH DEVOTION

Kodachadri, situated in the Western Ghats in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, is undeniably one of the most stunning tourist spots in India. A visit to Kodachadri could be an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, hikers, photographers, and thrill-seeking drivers. It is located 1343 meters above sea level and is approximately 30 kilometers away from the temple town Kollur. The area is surrounded by verdant hills and is home to a diverse range of wildlife and tropical flora. The valley has been designated as a natural heritage site by the state government. The term Kodachadri (Kodachadri in Kannada, Kutajadri in Sanskrit, and Malayalam കുടജാദ്രി) originates from the Sanskrit words ‘Kutaja’ and ‘Adri’. Kutaja refers to a species of Mountain Jasmine flower (കുടകപ്പാല, Kutakappaala or Giri-Mallika) while Adri signifies a hill. The Kutaja plant also possesses Ayurvedic medicinal qualities. The breathtaking vista from the summit of Kodachadri peak is captivating. The peak can be reached via a challenging trekking path spanning approximately 9 to 12 km through thick woodland. POETRY IN STONE : MADANIKAS OF BELUR

The Hoysala empire is named after a legend from Kannada folklore, which narrates the tale of a brave young man named Sala who courageously defeated a lion (or tiger) to protect his Master Sudatta. In Kannada language, “Hoy, Sala” translates to “Strike Sala,” which eventually became the moniker of the dynasty he established. This heroic event is symbolized in the emblem of the Hoysala empire. Visitors are greeted by a statue depicting Sala’s battle with the lion at the entrance of the Chennakesava temple in Belur. The construction of the temple took place under the reign of Vishnuvardhana from the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th century AD. As per the myth, the main architects of Chennakeshava Temple were ‘Amarashilpi Jakanacharya’ and his son ‘Dankanacharya’. FACE TO FACE WITH HISTORY :: BELUR & HALEBID

Belur (ಬೇಲೂರು in the Kannada language) which served as the former capital of the Hoysala Empire and Halebidu, situated 16 kilometers from Belur, both part of the Hassan district are prominent tourist spots in Karnataka. Belur is positioned along the banks of the Yagachi River, a tributary of the Kaveri River. The distance between Belur and Bangalore is approximately 222 kilometers. Belur’s primary highlight is the Chennakesava temple, renowned for its intricate carvings and Hoysala craftsmanship. The name ‘Chenna’ Kesava translates to ‘Handsome Vishnu’, the principal deity of the temple, enshrined at the heart of the temple complex, flanked by the Kappe Chennigraya temple and several other shrines. Constructed by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate his triumph over the Cholas at Talakkad (read it here), the temple’s construction is said to have spanned 103 years according to legend. SARNATH, THE BIRTH PLACE OF BUDDHISM

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” :-Gautam Buddha The emblem of India was derived from an Ashoka Pillar discovered in Sarnath. The Lion Capital of Ashoka is a statue featuring four lions seated back to back, as well as the ‘Dharm Chakra’ (Wheel of Dharma/ Ashoka Chakra, with 24 spokes) positioned on top and mounted on a pillar (Stupa, Stambh). Emperor Ashoka erected the renowned Ashoka Pillar at this site, which was destroyed by Turk and Islamic invaders. The remnants of the pillar can still be seen at its original location, bearing inscriptions in Brahmi script. The Lion Capital and Ashoka Chakra are preserved in the adjacent Archaeology museum. The four lions symbolize power, courage, confidence, and pride, as well as Ashoka’s rule extending in all four directions. MANA, THE LAST INDIAN VILLAGE AND THE ROAD TO HEAVEN

Mana, famously known as the last village on Indian land, with Tibet situated beyond, was a destination we were eager to explore. The well-known trade route, Mana Pass, is located 48 kilometers ahead of this village, but has been closed-off since 1962. After parking our car at the entrance of Mana, we set off on foot through the village. This mysterious Himalayan valley is renowned for its mythological significance, being surrounded by a plethora of myths and legends from the epic Mahabharat. It is widely believed that Veda Vyas composed the Mahabharat while residing in this very place. GREAT INDIAN ARCHITECTURE SERIES :: SOMANATHPURA

The Chennakesava Temple was built in 1268 C.E by Soma, a Dandanayaka (commander) in the Hoysala Kingdom during the rule of King Narasimha III. The intricate and detailed carving style is commonly found in the Hoysala temples of Karnataka, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, contemporary culture, art forms, and weaponry. Soapstone ((steatite or talc-schist)) is the material of choice for carving, providing a remarkable finish. The softness of soapstone allows for shaping even with finger nails, and instead of the traditional hammer and chiselling process, many pillars and sculptures were created using lathe turning or scraping motion of the tools. A touch of polishing with oil would bring out a lifelike appearance in them. The side walls are intricately carved with depictions of cavalry, elephants, and scenes from epics such as Mahabharat, Ramayan, and Bhagavat. The sculptures show extreme attention to detail, reflecting the culture, clothing, dances, jewelry, weaponry, and more of that era. Research students can gain valuable insights into the history of the period through these carvings. This Vaishnava temple faces east and is surrounded by a strong boundary wall (prakara). THE REAL ENEMIES LIVE INSIDE YOURSELF; THEY ARE ANGER, EGO, PRIDE, CURVEDNESS, GREED, ATTACHMENTS AND HATRED” :- Lord Mahavir Bahubali, according to Jainism, is revered as the epitome of a man who overcomes selfishness, jealousy, pride, and anger. The 57-foot monolithic statue of Gomateshvara (Bahubali) at Shravanabelagola holds great significance as a pilgrimage site for Jain followers. Shravanabelagola translates to “White pond of the ascetic” and is situated amidst two hills. The larger hill is known as Indragiri/Vindyagiri (Doddabetta) while the smaller one is called Chandragiri (Chikkabetta). One can observe over two millennia of Jain history at this location. Emperor Chandra Gupta Maurya (340 – 298 BC) chose to live out his last days as a Jain monk at Chandragiri. He had successfully expanded his empire to encompass various regions of the Indian subcontinent, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Balochistan. The Maurya kingdom thrived under the wise counsel of the renowned philosopher Chanakya and also benefited from their alliance with Macedonian king Alexander and his descendants. GREAT INDIAN ARCHITECTURE SERIES :: MYSTERIOUS TALAKAD

They say ‘fact is stranger than fiction !!’ Talakad, located near Mysore in India, is a historical site that was once home to more than 30 temples, now buried under sand. The massive sand dunes that cover the area have sparked numerous myths and legends among the locals. Ongoing excavations have led to the recovery of several temples from the sand dunes. The photos included were taken by me at the same location, with a 24-year gap between them. The first picture shows us standing on the partially visible Mahadwara (grand entrance) of the Kirtinarayana temple, which has since been fully recovered and restored (as shown in the picture below). Talakkad was established by the Ganga Dynasty during the first millennium CE, and subsequently by the Tamil Cholas from the 11th to the 12th centuries. The town later fell under the control of the Hoysalas in the 12th century. It was later conquered by the Vijayanagar rulers and the Maharajas of Mysore. Talakkad was engulfed by sand over 400 years ago, leading to various theories surrounding this enigma. ULSOOR LAKE, BANGALORE IN 1984 AND TODAY

ULSOOR LAKE, BANGALORE, photographed from the same spot within a gap of 30 years . The first picture was photographed by me in 1984. The famous Ulsoor Lake of Bangalore. The sepia tone came naturally due to the ageing of film. Those were the days of peace & tranquility in Bangalore…! Captured with a Yashica Electro-35 film camera. Let’s have a look at the same place today (Jan-2015), photographed from the very same location. I was happy to notice that nothing much has changed around the lake during these 3 decades, though most of the city’s greenery has been eaten up by concrete jungle..! The Public Utility Building built in 1973 was the tallest building those days, which is still visible today in the background.

SORROWS OF A FALLEN FLOWER ( വീണപൂവ് )

The sight of a fallen flower may seem insignificant to many. Back in 1907, the renowned poet from Kerala, Kumaranasan, eloquently portrayed the unattained aspirations of a fallen flower through his poignant words. Reflecting on the legacy of this great poet… വിലകുറഞ്ഞ ഒരു വിഷയം എന്നു തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും, 100 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപ് (1907-ൽ), മഹാകവി കുമാരനാശാൻ ഒരു പൂവിന്റെ പൂർത്തീകരിക്കാൻ കഴിയാതെപോയ സ്വപ്നങ്ങളേക്കുറിച്ച് 1000-ൽ കൂടുതൽ വാക്കുകളിൽ വർണ്ണിച്ചു. “ഹാ” എന്നു തുടങ്ങി, “കഷ്ടം” എന്ന് അവസാനിക്കുന്ന ഈ കവിത, മനുഷ്യജന്മത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഫലനം തന്നെയല്ലേ ?!
